Sclerotherapy
Sclerotherapy is the non-surgical treatment of varicose and spider
veins. Varicose veins are diseased veins that have become permanently
dilated. They occur because valves within the lumen of certain veins
become incompetent and as a result they allow the blood to flow
backwards distending the vein, and in time, causes the vein to stretch
and become dilated. The sclerotherapy is done by injecting a small
amount of solution (called a sclerotic agent) into a varicose vein. The
sclerosing solution irritates the lining of the vein and causes causes
the vein to become inflamed and later on will dry up. The vein is
replaced with a fibrous tissue that is reabsorbed by the body and
disappears.
